The Lukan Organic Farming Community (UCF) hosted its first Vegetable Market Day on June 21 at Kingsmill West Secondary School in Soweto. Residents had the opportunity to purchase fresh, organic vegetables, including beetroot, spinach, garlic, spring onions, and carrots, all grown locally by the farming collective.
UCF chairperson Frances Marsh explained that the initiative goes beyond just selling produce. “We want to show our community that farming can lead to sustainable businesses,” she said. The group plans to process their harvest into food products for wider distribution.
Shaan Smith, a UCF member, demonstrated the health benefits of beetroot juice, noting its ability to help regulate blood pressure. Bheki Twala, founder of Bheki Twala Township Economic Development, emphasized the importance of supporting local farmers. “The township economy is not secondary—it’s the backbone of our society,” he said.
The event also featured homemade Ubuntu spinach steamed bread with a garlic and coriander sauce, giving attendees a taste of what locally grown food can offer. Boxes of mixed vegetables were sold for just R10 to ensure affordability.
